Two King class locomotives storm out of Newton Abbott with an express for Plymouth on a busy Summer Saturday in the mid-fifties when holiday trains and specials had to be worked into an already tight timetable. Within a mile the train would reach the start of Dainton bank the first of the fearsome Devon gradients on the route to the West.
In the background a Devon General bus is passing over the bridge bound for the bus station in Newton Abbott having traveled from Torquay or possibly Brixham and in the far distance stands the cooling tower of the now defunct power station.
This oils on canvas was painted a few years ago for one of my best clients, a true Great Western enthusiast Pete Underhay whom I would like to thank for kindly sending me this image to use as I may.
