Description
Major airports are technically 24/7, but there is a time when it drops off to a trickle. This period is approximately from 2:00a thru 5:00a, a three hour window when almost nothing is happening.
The keyword is "almost". Cargo flights still drop on in, as does the occasional late arrival. It is also the time when maintenance crews do their test runs of engines they may have wrenched on. But for the most part, this "after hours" period is a moment of dead calm and uncanny silence. so when a plane moves on the field, it is invariable the only one doing so, and it very easily stands out.
As does this -800 on the night I took this. An American Airlines maintenance crew is running an engine on this 737 which has been worked on. The fact that it is so far away from the terminals and hangars lends to that all-alone feel that a plane operating at this time of the night has.
