Description
As the snow storm moves north and the morning sunshine gains footing in the east, Mother Nature's tiny feathered children gather around the backyard feeder and tend to the business of getting breakfast. As he waits his turn, this little House sparrow perches impatiently on the branches of a redbud tree, as the last of the snow showers twinkle behind him.
A non-native species, the House Sparrow was introduced into the US in 1851 from Europe to alleviate homesickness for the Old World and because they were believed to control insect pests. But they have become what is considered an invasive species and are competitors for our native cavity nesters (like our eastern blue birds), and their nest sites. They will evict other nesting birds, destroy their eggs, kill nestlings and sometimes even kill the incubating female. So … as pretty as he is … he is a stinker.
Last year, when the bluebirds were nesting in our yard, I actually took all the feeders down to reduce the amount of birdie traffic and possibility of trouble for the blues. It worked … our backyard was a serene, peaceful place for them and their broods.
Fine art and product purchases of this image will not include a watermark, and if I may make a recommendation ... wall art will look its very best on the fine art paper choice of "picture rag."
