Description
On the constant lookout for my next floral subject, two things immediately captured my attention about these particular lilies. First of all, as the afternoon sun was shining brightly, the intoxicating yellow colors dancing all over the flower petals were something I had to paint. I could already envision the palette needed to capture the beauty of this flower, Primrose Yellow against a pool of deep green. This contrast would best convey the warmth of the summer sun and the warm yellow also reminded me of fun filled summer days of my childhood. Secondly, I found the undulating ruffles on the edges of the petals intriguing as they added a little playfulness to an otherwise regal setting. I couldn't wait to get it on the easel.
I would like to thank my good friend, Brad, who spotted these beautiful lilies in his neighbor's garden. I wanted to show my appreciation by acknowledging him in the title of the painting but "Lilies for Brad" just didn't do it! As I pondered over this for a couple of days, my wife mentioned that she has always loved the title John Singer Sargent used for one of his paintings, "Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose". Unfortunately, there weren't any roses or carnations in my painting. However, Brad has a beautiful daughter and her name is Olivia Rose! I had found the perfect title.
