Description
The Ruby-throated Hummingbird breeds from southern Canada across the central and eastern states to the Gulf Coast. It is the only hummingbird that breeds east of the Mississippi River. The Ruby-throated migrates to the tropics from coastal southern Mexico south. Its favorite habitats are woodlands, orchards, and gardens. Their migration north is timed according to the appearance of certain flowers along their route. The flower in this image is a camellia (hybrid of camellia japonica). Native to tropical and subtropical areas in eastern and southern Asia, from the Himalayas east to Japan and Indonesia, and was introduced into the U.S. near Charleston, South Carolina in 1786.
“Red Camellia and Hummingbird” is a hand-painted digital image created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 4/30/2023.
