Description
The Walnut Grove Bridge, spanning the river in the California Sacramento River Delta, has concrete counterweights which hold the bridge open when the bridge is lifted to allow tall boats to pass beneath. It is controlled by mechanics and a bridge tender. I am sure everything is computerized now but still requires a tender.
Walnut Grove, the location of this bridge, is my childhood home town.
Bascule bridges are a common sight in both the Sacramento Delta and San Joaquin Delta and are considered historic bridges. The Walnut Grove Bascule Bridge connects both sides of the town of Walnut Grove which lies on both the east and west sides of the Sacramento River.
This is a distant, more inclusive view of the river and bridge. A mural type closeup is also included in this gallery.
