I hope it's OK if I use the discussion here to both express my fondness and affection for the turkey vulture and request any one who has a nice painting of a turkey vulture consider entering the MATCHING SETS OF COFFEE CUPS contest...... submissions end 5:51 pm Saturday December 30, 2023. Voting is open to everyone but I have promised to buy at least 2 coffee cups of my choosing.... while I am thrilled with everything submitted and I already want more than 2 I would love to see the following.... some sort of fond affectionate appreciative turkey vulture paintings.....I imagine a thick visibly textured painting but oil watercolor charcoal ink ...... flying coasting eating sleeping etc. I think I may sponsor an only turkey vultures contest sometime but Id love to hear from others with a similar appreciation. Where I live when the Mississippi river freezes the bald eagles congregate here in large numbers due to open water from locks and damns and everybody loves the bald eagle but I could watch the turkey vultures ride the winds for hours without ever once flapping their wings. It was recently brought home again how some people hate insects and little crawly things I already know a lot of people find vultures too disgusting to appreciate. Thoughts?

Shelli and everyone....I probably should have said please read contest rules but contest is traditional visual paintings drawings sculpture and documentary style photos with no ai digital painting or even photoshop. Only mention that because I don't want anyone to create just for this unless it fits contest rules. That said anyone who wants to create something new fast is welcome to.

Turkey vultures do a fantastic clean up!
Having lived most of my life "out in the country", if it weren't for the vultures, the landscape would be a stinking mess.
They're also entertaining to watch, circling on updrafts for hours, but not interesting enough for me to paint them :)
That's so cool that you get to see bald eagles!!!!
Good luck with your contest quest!

I've devoted my life to Turkey Vultures
Here is one version turned into a image for a mug
https://pixels.com/featured/vulture-on-sloping-tree-r-allen-swezey.html?product=coffee-mug
I have plenty of other vulture images that can be transferred into an image suitable for a mug
Check out my "Tangible Art" work

Please note my tangible art is a combination of actual personally scavenged natural matter and bit of acrylic painting

Somewhere on my hard drives I have some photos of turkey vultures roosting in a tree close to where my parents lived. They were always there. But that would take some searching. For now I have this photo of them by the ocean. We see them frequently soaring overhead and of course when there's something to scavenge.

"I've devoted my life to Turkey Vultures" Roger Swezey on December 25 2023. If there is a single sentence I've enjoyed more rereading several times I don't recall. Thanks for your quick response I clicked on both links and first went straight to turkey vulture on coffee cup...cool.....2nd went to site (I'll look at again) but where I quickly found and favorited your VULTURE WITH BLUE MOON ORIGINAL artwork uploaded March 22, 2015.viewed 162 times. Lovely and uplifting. Thanks for noting materials. I don't know if you enter any of the contests these days but if you do please feel free to enter any of your Turkey Vulture work that fits. Or not as you choose. Thanks Roger. Carlin thanks for your praise for vultures.......That's so cool that you get to see the vultures "circling on updraft for hours"!!!!!!(I'm so accustomed to the bald eagles they're just normal. I think since I'm doing this art/paintings/photos display and sales site I need to get a good camera/lens before the river freezes because everybody loves eagles and bald eagles photos and sometimes you should give the people what they want.they say the fish are stunned and easier to catch going through/over the locks and damns.) Oh yeah Roger FAA Abbie approved image thread... if you want please put up VULTURE WITH A BLUE MOON ORIGINAL. Thanks Peggy Gaby Elizabeth and Shelli thanks for the vulture images. I knew they were out there. ( note to Shelli .... I didn't mean that only for you and have looked at and liked your work but thought I recalled that some works won't fit contest but do fit this image thread and I had imagined already and hoped there might be some fast painters open to a Turkey Vulture challenge ) thanks and best wishes to everyone

Gary, I took no offense. My work doesn't always fit and that is okay. I do love the buzzards though! Could you imagine how it would be without the scavengers to clean up all the dead carcasses? ewww!

When I did the Art Show at the National Avairy, Pittsburgh. where most artists did blue birds, the staff there were so amazed and thankful that I did.... Vultures.
Of all the birds there, the vultures were their favorites, ...because they were truly LOVABLE...

While on Safari in South Africa we came across a lion guarding his prey, a buffalo he had recently killed. The vultures wait in the Acacia Trees and grasses watching and waiting for the lion to retreat. Vultures are usually the first to break the skin after a kill. The hide is too tough for the rest of the other animals so they wait their turn. The law of the jungle in action.

Hey. I just read that unused treads close after 2 months and I had planned to revisit this soon but do not want to let this close. Thanks to everyone who contributed to my crappie Christmas day weather I didn't even want to go outside to plant tulip bulbs somebody/anybody cheer me up with Turkey Vultures please request. Thanks to everyone who submitted/contributed to this approved image thread who I had not already thanked. People are invited to submit more. I live in town and don't often get to see them. I could watch them for hours coasting and never flapping their wings. Aren't they lovely? XXXXXXXX. LAST EDIT ADDITION. David...thank you for explanation. I knew I should have come back sooner but real life and working on site etc and I was saving that time since I thought treads remained open until closed by whoever put them up. THANKS AGAIN FAA ABBIE for allowing this to be an image thread. This is February 4, 2024 today and since this is the last post here and I want to announce that in April or May or maybe even June 2024 I will administer/curate a unretouched photos and a paintings etc Turkey Vultures And Other Vultures Too contest. I say that now because I had planned to announce it on this thread and even more because people said I've got vulture photos but it might take weeks to find them and for painters, drawers, sculpturists who have been waiting for the right moment to do a Vulture painting.... the time is now. Then enter the contest and show off your new work. Thanks again everyone. If it was legal in this country when I die they could put my body on a table 20 feet Tall and let the vultures feast. I know they do that somewhere and it seems like a good idea to me. Instead of a rotting corpse a thoroughly picked clean skeleton......but I digress.......
