Starting over at age 65 seems crazy. Starting over at age 77 is crazier yet. But here we are, my husband (77) and I (65) are rebuilding our lives after the Lahaina fire on August 8th, 2023. It's been a long hard six months. My art studio and his print shop were completely destroyed by the fire. We were lucky in that we didn't lose our home, a tiny one bedroom condo nine miles from the fire. Because our condo was so tiny, we stored a huge amount of personal stuff at our shop/studio, family photos and history, treasured heirlooms and so much more. Two weeks after the fire we made the decision to move back to California. But we had a lot of work to do before we could make that happen. First we had to finish the remodel we started just before COVID hit, doing most of the work ourselves.
Second, we had to research where in Northern California we wanted to go. That in its self was very stressful. We settled on Grass Valley for two reasons, one it was centrally located to our families, and two it has a great art community. We searched for a house that would accommodate both our businesses that fit into our budget with no luck. What we did find was a 1,500 square foot commercial building for sale. We bought it and found a hose to lease for a year while we settle in and get to know this new community.
The third thing we had to do was decide what we were packing and what we were leaving. We decided to sell our condo completely furnished, including dishes, silverware. pots/pans, linens, towels...everything someone needs for a new home. it is our hope someone who lost their home in the fire will buy our condo completely ready for them to move in. What we packed all fit into a 5x8x7 foot U-Box from U-Hall. When we moved to Maui 11 and a half years ago, we came with a 40 foot container. Most of what was in that container was destroyed in the fire.
Now, here we are settling in Grass Valley. We just spent 5 months remodeling our condo and now we are fixing up the commercial building we bought and transforming it into our new studios. The house we leased is a short drive away.
So here is the most crazy thing, we have no furniture for either place. We have been doing a lot of shopping ( like every day) to get us by. We bought a bed, couch set, and T.V. for the three bedroom house. Plus dishes, pots/pans silverware etc..( remember, we left all that in Maui.) It feels as if we are a young couple just starting out in life with nothing. Our new studios are mostly empty. Charlie found a desk and chair on Craigs list, and I inherited my mom's easel and some of the furniture from her gallery she closed in 2008. I have been posting photos of our progress on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/daricemachel/ and Facebook https://www.facebook.com/DariceMachel.MauiArtist
Both Charlie and I are anxious to get back to work and to start getting to know our new community and the people who live here. His new printer arrives today, internet was set up yesterday, and the rolls of canvas arrived a couple of days ago. He is closer to getting to work than I am. I still have a lot of shopping to do to get my studio ready, and my classroom set up for teaching. I hope it will only take two more weeks. This is the longest I've gone ( 6 months) without painting.

Darice, been watching your progress on FB. I don't know if I could have done what you are doing. I'm really rooting for you to get established and back to what you love. That fire was horrendous for so many people. I guess you were lucky in that it did not take your residence, but still losing all that personal stuff that was stored in your studio and all that WORK you lost - like you said at one point, at least we can still enjoy your work here. I bought a couple of your greeting cards, and after I take care of some large approaching expenses, I may buy a print.
My daughter has a degree in art and takes commissions for graphite and pastel work, and she said "Wow, she's really talented" when I showed her the greeting cards. Hugs for all the stress, but now perhaps you are moving away from the stress part (which was obviously massive) to the "new adventure" part.
Good luck and take care of yourself. Onward!!

Darice, so sorry for your losses! I have lost precious things in fires before and know how devastating it can be. I pray that you are able to rebuild better than ever. Just so thankful that your lives were spared and I hope you find your new normal soon!

Good timing Darcie. My wife just asked me a couple of days ago if I had read anything new on your situation. Now I can update her.
Thanks for the update and may we suggest the best for you and Charlie in your new journey.

Darice, I am glad you are starting over and for not giving up. You guys are amazing. Did you ever set up the Amazon gift list for what items you need to replace? Is that GoFundMe page still active?

Dearest Darice,
I feel deeply what you and your hubby are going through.
For I had to deal with a somewhat similar malevolent power.
Mine being Super Storm Sandy.
Now, ten years later, at 88, I happily live in a funky house, far away from the Atlantic Ocean.
So, if this old coot, can start all over and still thrive, YOU CERTAINLY CAN
(by the way, my neighbor, used every means possible, to get possession of that little shell of a house....He, then, not only tore down my house, he tore down his own, less affected house ( the one on the left) and built a humongous mc mansion)

Darice,
I am happy for you. The happiest of couples heal each other. I sense that.
We came into this world with nothing. We leave this world with nothing.
You have something very important.

Darice, I am so sorry you had to go through this, but I very much admire your courage, determination, and most of all, your positive attitude.

I didn't mean to post and run yesterday. There is so much going on right now it's crazy. I really can't thank you all enough for your encouragement.
Roger, I love your example, your strength and tenacity.
Iris, I think the GoFundMe is still up. I have an Amazon wish list, is that the same as a gift list?

Although the causes were different I too am starting over again after loosing almost everything. Good luck. I would make a joke about pitching a tent in your warm California yard but my sense of humor seems to be easily misunderstood online. So while I like the idea it's just a joke.......at least until next December. ..... EDIT ADDITION. For anyone else I saw your collection PHOTOS NOT FOR SALE that has photos of your previous studio and at least 1 photo taken after the fire if anyone else wants to look.

One thing I have found helpful when starting over is to find a high quality thrift store and buy stuff that makes you feel at home. Simple inexpensive items that you always had can make you feel like you never lost them. Silverware, plates, bowls and even chairs that look like ones you had give some continuity and comfort, and a connection to the past.

Bradford that's a great idea. I keep telling my husband we don't have to buy everything new. At the moment he feels as if we are bleeding money.
Gary, I would laugh at your joke about pitching a tent in our California yard, except we are in northern California, in the Sierra Mountains.....it's frigging cold here!
